The importance of a good night’s sleep can’t be overstated, so we all want to do what it takes to sleep better. Thankfully, choices for improving sleep have evolved over the years. CBD (cannabidiol) is slowly making its way into many aspects of our lives, from our coffee to body lotions to pet treats. It is said to offer a natural, safe way to relax. Because of this, many are advocating that CBD offers positive effects on sleep as well.

First, it is important to state that CBD does not cause the same psychoactive effects as other naturally occurring cannabinoids (such as THC or what you probably think of as marijuana). Joseph Maroon, M.D., a clinical professor and neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has researched the effect of cannabis on the brain and says that CBD has properties that helps people sleep better because it appears to ease anxiety and pain. Other research, like a 2017 review of sleep and cannabis in the journal Current Psychiatry Reports, hints that CBD may also affect sleep directly, by interacting with receptors in the brain that govern the body’s daily sleep and wake cycles. 

CBD oil can be consumed in several different ways, including capsules and other food products, as well as vapor, tinctures, and topical creams. The way you consume CBD oil is about more than just personal preference, interestingly enough. Vaping CBD works more quickly, because vaping gets the compound into your system fast. On the other hand, pills, oils, and other edibles may help you sleep longer, because they release the CBD more slowly. If you opt for one of those forms, experts suggest consuming the CBD about an hour before you would like to fall asleep.

All 50 states have laws governing the sale, possession, and use of CBD. It is legal everywhere in the United States, as long as you follow these rules. CBD is considered a safe, non-habit-forming, natural alternative to prescription medication for pain or sleep disorders but it is always a good idea to speak with your doctor before beginning a new regimen.  

Study after study has shown the importance of quality sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle. Sleep deficiencies have an affect on everything from mental health to cognitive function to your immune system being able to keep you from getting sick. It’s easy to understand why people are turning to CBD to help with sleep: Almost 80 percent of Americans say they have trouble sleeping at least once a week, according to a recent survey. The best way to get a good night of sleep and wake up rejuvenated in the morning is by sleeping on a high-quality mattress and the right supportive pillow. If you’ve already set up your ideal bedroom environment and still are not seeing the results you’d like, CBD is a wonderful next option.
