Our homes should be oases of calm where we can retreat to from the hectic world we live in. That’s something we can all appreciate, especially this year. However, this mindset is often easier said than done. It seems like every corner of your house stands as a reminder of something you didn’t quite get to yet! You probably have emails that need to be checked. There’s laundry piling up again. Don’t forget to put the bills in the mailbox. The dishwasher needs to be unloaded. The television is on in the other room and you can hear the news, with nothing good being reported. The refrigerator is looking a bit bare, so you better head to the grocery store soon. Your kids need help with their homework. Your spouse wants to tell you about their day. It all adds up and weighs heavily on your mental health.
Wouldn’t it be great if you had a place in your bedroom completely devoted to chasing away stressful emotions? This way, you can ease your mind and settle down for the night in a way that brings sleep much easier. What you need is a space with comforting surroundings where you can clear your mind. This is a meditation corner.
It is important to note that there are no specific rules for creating one, but a few pieces of advice will help you create a personalized space that is just right for you.
Step #1 First, choose a space that simply feels good. You need to make sure that it’s always clean and uncluttered. For many, this could be on top of their bed. If your bed is made of a luxury mattress, organic pillows, and premium linens, this is an ideal place to begin. If you don’t want to be on your bed, in a corner near it is another good idea. Once you’ve decided exactly where it will be, all that remains is for you to decorate and personalize your meditation corner. What will help you transition into a quiet mindset?
Step #2 Next, add a meditation pillow. This is different from the high-quality pillows you sleep on each night. You don’t necessarily need a specific brand, but you do need to focus on comfort and posture when choosing one. Be sure to select a meditation pillow that will allow you to maintain perfect posture during your practice by propping your hips up higher than your knees. If you find one you love but don’t feel quite comfortable enough, you can always remove some of the pillow’s filling to flatten it a bit. When you’re sleeping and not meditating, you’ll want to put this pillow away in a safe spot.
Remember, proper posture is key to your meditation practice. Some people may find it difficult to meditate using a cushion. You won’t be easing into a mindset of peacefulness and sleepiness if you’re uncomfortable and constantly adjusting. For these people, a bamboo bench will offer the needed ergonomic support. A bench is ideal for the traditional Japanese kneeling posture, called the “seiza” position.
Step #3 Now that your space is set up for you to meditate in the correct posture and comfort, it’s time to add a few accessories to your special area. Everyone loves candles! They lighten up the space and create an enchanting and intimate ambiance. You may also want Tibetan singing bowls, a wall tapestry, and crystals. You’ll want to make sure all of your senses are engaged in a pleasant way. An incense holder means your area will smell wonderful. A trickling foundation will be very soothing to your ears. You may even want to add a Japanese Zen garden that both looks and smells beautiful. If you find yourself with a lot of accessories, select a small table to place in your corner by your bed. Just make sure you don’t allow the area to get too cluttered.
Overthinking and the stress that comes along with it makes its way into all of our daily lives. It could be the result of work stress, difficult relationships, the health worries you feel during the COVID-19 Pandemic, or trying to help your kids every day with their virtual schooling. You now know everything you need in order to create your own meditation corner in your bedroom. You can use items like incense and a fountain to bring serenity into your bedroom once you have selected the perfect, comfortable spot. Set up your meditation corner and sleep will be much easier to achieve each night.
