Whether you live in South Florida, Buffalo, New York, or anywhere in between, the weather is getting warmer outside. This may be great for your pool day plans, but it’s not as nice when it is time to fall asleep and your bedroom is hot too. This summer heat can affect your ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up feeling refreshed.
Sleep and temperature are intrinsically connected through our circadian rhythm. Naturally, our core body temperature decreases during the nocturnal sleep phase and increases during the wake phase. This means when you warm up, you wake up!
The Ideal Sleeping Temperature
Lowering the temperature of your room a few hours before bed is an ideal way to initiate your body's natural cool-down process. This helps tell your body and mind it is time to prepare for sleep. The optimal temperature for sleep is considered 65 degrees Fahrenheit. However, anything in the high 60s could work, even up to 68 or 69 degrees. Few of us put our air conditioners down this low, though. Along with lowering your thermostat, consider sleeping on a premium mattress made with temperature technology in mind and incorporating cool bedding essentials like a mattress pad, pillows, and bedsheets, as well.
What to Avoid
You will want to avoid exercising close to bedtime, as it will increase your internal temperature. Getting in a daily workout is incredibly important though, so you will want to exercise in the morning if possible, but at least several hours before bedtime if you can’t fit in it any earlier. This will allow your body the opportunity to cool down before you climb into bed.
You will also want to avoid eating hot, heavy, or spicy food late into the evening. These meals, particularly near bedtime, will keep your body’s core temperature higher than it should be to sleep well.
While your grandmother’s quilt or flannel sheets may be your favorite way to feel cozy, you’ll want to avoid heavy bedding this time of year. Crisp cotton linens are best for the summer. Also, wear lightweight, loose-fitting pajamas made from natural fibers like cotton or linen that absorb sweat and allow the skin to breathe. Avoid any synthetic fabrics.
